- Your site is slow, dated, or breaking and nothing gets fixed.
- You are paying every month but cannot tell what you are getting.
- You are not allowed to have your own domain or accounts.
- You simply do not trust the person handling something this important.
The ownership trap
Here is the hard part many Columbus businesses run into. A lot of cheap or bundled website deals keep your domain, your site, or your accounts under the provider's control. When you try to leave, you find out you do not actually own the thing you have been paying for, and you either get held up or have to start over.

How to switch safely
Done in the right order, a switch is smooth:
- Confirm the domain is registered in your name, or get it transferred to you.
- Get access to or a full copy of your website files and content.
- Take ownership of your hosting, Google Business Profile, and analytics accounts.
- Line up your new designer before you cut ties, so there is no gap.
- Then, and only then, make the change.
Do not start from zero if you do not have to
Switching does not always mean rebuilding from scratch. Sometimes your content and domain move cleanly and the new site goes up fast. Other times, if the old site is trapped in a platform or badly built, a fresh, better site is actually the cheaper path. A good designer will tell you honestly which situation you are in.
Either way, you keep your domain, your brand, and your Google presence. You are upgrading the house, not moving to a new city.
